Outdoor living spaces in Simcoe County have evolved beyond basic pressure-treated decks into luxurious, architecturally designed timber-frame sanctuaries. For this modern custom residence in Midhurst/Barrie, Sean Pro Contracting was commissioned to design and build a 450-square-foot timber-framed covered rear porch pavilion integrated into the main roofline.
Concept & Structural Timber Design
The homeowner desired a year-round outdoor entertainment hub featuring warm, exposed natural wood elements that could withstand Ontario's harsh weather while matching the home's dark charcoal exterior trim.
Sean Pro Contracting framed the main structure using solid 8x8 Select Structural Douglas Fir posts and principal rafters, connected with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery reinforced with concealed heavy-gauge steel knife plates.
Custom Woodwork & Finishing Details
- Heavy Timber Post & Beam Framework: Precision-cut 8x8 Douglas Fir posts mounted on engineered concrete helical pile footings set below the frost line (5 feet deep).
- Tongue-and-Groove Cedar Soffit Ceiling: Installed 1x6 kiln-dried Clear Western Red Cedar V-joint tongue-and-groove boards finished with a UV-protective satin clear coat seal.
- Integrated Electrical & Ambience: Pre-drilled internal wire chases through structural beams to accommodate 8 low-voltage recessed LED soffit lights and an outdoor ceiling fan.
- Architectural Steel Hardware Accent: Applied powder-coated black structural iron ties and timber screws for a bold industrial-rustic contrast.
